This paper is the first work placement for the BE (Hons) degree and is typically undertaken during the summer at the end of the second year. Placements are secured with the assistance of the WIL Coordinators and students are usually paid seasonal rates during the work placement. Assessment is based on assessment items set during the placement (some are compulsory assignments) and student work performance evaluation.

Students are required to have successfully completed ENGEN270 in order to commence this paper. The work placement is intended to develop professional skills through work in a relevant professional workplace, as students work alongside professional engineers. Work placements allow students to observe professional practice and workplace cultures and consider potential careers. Students will be provided opportunity to apply knowledge and skills learnt at university and develop technical knowledge and skills, interpersonal skills, and a professional work ethic.

Assessment of student learning is based on the completion of two assessment items. This paper is wholly internally assessed. The
'Placement Brief & Health & Safety assignment', and 'Technical Report assignments' are compulsory - failure to submit this report will result in an IC grade for the paper. Student assignments comprises 60% of the grade (assignments detailed below) with the remaining 40% deriving from the student's work performance evaluation. Additional details of the assignments will be provided on Moodle.

This paper has a Moodle page (http://elearn.waikato.ac.nz (http://elearn.waikato.ac.nz/)) where you will be able to access PDFs and assessment materials. There are also discussion forums where you can both ask and answer questions. Your technical report assignment must be submitted electronically through Moodle, no hardcopy submission is required. If your report is deemed 'confidential' please talk to your placement coordinator (in such cases, hard copy could be the only way to handle the report).
